Osteoarthritis

What is osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis also known as Degenerative Joint Disease, is the most common type of arthritis. This chronic disease has affected over 27 million people in the United States alone. Osteoarthritis is considered a progressive disease and without proper treatment; symptoms and signs will gradually worsen over time. Simply said osteoarthritis is the “wear and tear” of your bones and joints.

What causes osteoarthritis?
OA is characterized by the breakdown of cartilage in a joint or joints. As cartilage breaks down your bones will come close together and begin to rub together. This causes pain, stiffness and in some cases bone spurring to takes place making it difficult for joint movement. Degenerative Joint Disease also damages surrounding ligaments, muscles and menisci.

What can chiropractic do for osteoarthritis?
While chiropractic cannot reverse the arthritic changes that have already occurred it can help improve joint and muscle function, therefore reducing the symptoms of Osteoarthritis. Chiropractic adjustments restore proper joint motion and nerve flow therefore decreasing or arresting any further muscle injury or joint disease.
